“If you don’t like what is being said, then change the conversation.”
–Don Draper

UK designer Megan Leung does’t like what is being said to women, so she is changing the conversation with her new label Meg at Midnight. Inspired by a friend who felt it was “embarrassing wearing a training bra and frustrating wearing an adult bra,” Ms. Leung saw a niche that was not properly being filled. Where other brands pack on the padding to disguise an inadequacy, Meg at Midnight celebrates the small with sexy, sheer, and pad-free pieces specifically designed to accentuate the slight figure.

Ms. Leung says: “Meg at Midnight is a designer intimatewear specializing in, but not limited to, the smaller busted woman. Our garments are carefully structured to fit and flatter rather than enhance small breasts. This is done by using a specific underwire (which makes the bras look more “grown up” as compared to a soft bra that often looks like a training bra). The materials as we use at the moment are delicate, which would not be ideal for supporting bigger and heavier busts.”

Mary Phelps Jacob revolutionized the undergarment world in 1913 when she combined two silk handkerchiefs and some string to create the first “modern” brassiere. Since then, countless designers, manufacturers, and retailers have claimed to revolutionize Ms. Jacob’s invention. From synthetic fabrics and underwires to retail hanging racks and personal fittings, the bra experience is still evolving and is still a long way from perfect. Today, a handful of new tech-savvy lingerie startups aim to take your bra experience one step closer to perfection.

Adore Me While I am (arguably) adorable, that is not a command. Adore Me is the latest website to toss its hat garter into the ring of private sale sites. It’s not a flash- or sample-sale site, though, where you have to jump on the deal right away or you lose it. Rather, they offer a personalized selection of bra/panty sets, tights and stockings, and an “accessory” section which consists of less-than-practical evening wear. Overall, the site has a lot of potential. There are some great features, but there are also plenty of pitfalls. We’ll nit-pick the hell out the site but first let’s take a look at how it works. Mimi Holiday "Allure" Lingerie, 2010

Review of size 32AA

The Allure demi from Mimi Holliday is one of the most exquisite bras I have ever laid eyes on. The super low-cut demi cups of this cream-colored bra have light foam padding, dusty lilac satin straps, and a polka dot silk overlay with contrasting scalloped lace trim. Playful matching satin bows decorate the straps and center gore. This masterfully designed piece was made to be seen and admired.

I measure about 28 inches around my ribcage and 33 inches around the fullest part of my chest. By the conventional method of bra fitting (adding 4 inches to the ribcage and then subtracting that from the full bust measurement), that makes me a perfect 32A.

Who went back to school this semester? You’re probably done with all your back to school shopping by now but when you picked up all your new notebooks and pencils, did you remember to get yourself some new undies? If not, how would you like $1000 worth of new Affinitas lingerie as well as $1000 for tuition?

Affinitas Intimates is holding a contest and all you have to do is send them some pics of your favorite back to school looks, like them on facebook, tell them where you go to school, what you study, and what you want to be when you grow up. Also, pick out your favorite new style from the new fall line. For complete rules, go to their website. The contest ends on Sept. 18, so hurry up!

For those not familiar with Affinitas Intimates, AAmanda tells me they are primarily a fashion lingerie brand and that their small-scale sizing makes them a good fit for petites. The new fall line, called “Forbidden Romance” features chemises, bras and bustiers ranging from everyday to occasional nights. Band sizes start at 30 and cups start at A. Also new for fall is the Parfait line with band sizes also starting at 30, but with a fuller cup fit ranging from D to G.

Lingerie brand Lilly Wiggler features old-school sensuality in the full range of sizes, including petite AA & A cups.

The Lilly Wiggler collections of bras, knickers, and corsets embody a unique vintage aesthetic — one that could not possibly have come from any other label. The look is not easily classified and seems to flirt with contradiction (deliberately? Perhaps…).

Black lace contour bra by Lilly Wiggler.

Honeydew Intimates Ruffle Mesh Bra, size 28-30 AAYikes. I’d never tried a Honeydew bralette before, but had heard good things… so I was pleased when I managed to get one new with tags at an online sample sale for a fraction of the retail price. Well, girls, to be perfectly honest: this bra does not travel well.

I had high hopes, but it arrived all mashed up in a tiny plastic bag. Total nightmare! It should have been sent in a box with tissue paper, attached to a hanger. The tag says “do not iron,” so all I can do is wait for it to sort itself out in the closet… but until then, I think I have at least a tentative sense of the correct size (after spending about twenty minutes coaxing the unfinished edges and vertical seams into place).

Sleek, simple, sexy: the little black dress of bras. If you’re scrambling to get all your holiday shopping done, gift certificates are a quick and easy last-minute solution. Just make sure to give it a personal touch — something to let the recipient know you spent some time thinking about what she would like.

My suggestion: get your wife or girlfriend a gift card from a designer lingerie boutique, and offer to go with her to pick out a luscious little indulgence or two. If she’s not the type to go for ruffles and lace, find a place that stocks elegant, classic bra sets from labels like On Gossamer, Chantelle, Lejaby, Huit, and Simone Perele. These high-end luxury brands make figure-flattering intimates in styles featuring sleek, clean lines and the simple beauty of a perfect fit.
